Another year, another article of me bashing all of your hard work leading up to the draft.
Baby Seals- B+
I liked Fred’s draft quite a bit, Mitchell seems to be the guy that could become one of the best players in the draft without too much imagination, and Miller and Yorke were guys I was really hoping to draft myself. I was critical of Jared Jones being a stereotypical High School arm, and wasn’t big on Mlozinski, but they were fine picks where they were made.
Ball Busters- D
It’s always hard to grade Eric’s lack of drafts, and this year is no different. I really liked Helcris Olivarez, and was lukewarm on Ivan Johnson, but didn’t even have the other two on my big board. It ends up being a D because Eric still only had 4 draft picks… after burning his team to the ground… before a draft he was actually going to attend. If you’re not going to draft this year, or for the next two years… that rebuild is going to take a while.
Banocolates- A-
Jeff got a lot of talent that I liked, and he god damn should have, drafting 5 times in the first round. Tork and Lacy were the best hitter and pitcher I had on my board, and I liked Hassell and Wells a fair amount too. Loftin and Foscue were classic boring Jeff picks, and all the crappy relievers at the end were perhaps a little overkill, but you can’t argue with the top end of his draft class, as his rebuild seems to be nearing the end.
BROB’s Barnacles- C+
I’m a bit conflicted about Brian’s draft, because he took a ton of players I didn’t like, at all, but like Ray, I thought the Cespedes picks was great, and most of his picks were fine value, even if I hated those particular players. In the end, I think the biggest surpise is Brian not jumping all over Ariharah or Flexen at any point, like he has plenty of pitching…?
Danimals- A-
FUCKING DAN had a good draft, especially early, STEALING 3 of the top 14 players on my draft board with his first three picks. Did he also take a couple of MLB guys too high in the middle of the draft? Yes, but that’s what we expect from Dan, unlike TAKING A FUCKING HIGH SCHOOL CATCHER IN THE FIRST, and besides, we all know Michael Taylor and Matt Moore will win the AL MVP and NL Cy Young, respectively, this season, because that’s what happens for Dan.
Fajita Eaters- C
Having Dan shatter all of my dreams, I couldn’t possibly be happy with my draft, even landing all players I did legitimately like. For whatever reason, I gravitated towards players not from the 2020 draft in the middle rounds, so it’s tough to discern their concensus value, but I liked them more than the first year players available there, so I guess if it makes me happy, anything to fill the hole in my heart left by Dan.
G.I. Zo’s- D+
Zobrack got some good talent in this draft, don’t get me wrong, but it was a few names I really didn’t like all that much, and the trade up to #4 still baffles me, but that’s between me and my therapist. I very well think Howard and/or PCA could still work out and be productive fantasy players, but I didn’t like them, so therefore my bullshit arbritary draft grade is going to be lower. I know people who gives grades shouldn’t play favorites, but well, you know…
Kelly’s Heroes- C+
JK sure had a lot of draft picks, but only two of them were in the first four rounds, so it’s a little tough to really love what he did, aside from filling out his again scarce prospect roster. I did like the Greene, Ginn, DeLoach, De Andrade and Topa picks, but otherwise it was a whole lot of “Oh, alright.” reactions from me. It’s too bad JK has a great Franchise naming theme going, because otherwise, his little league should definitely be called ‘Penny Stocks’.
Motley Shue- C
I’m shocked and appaled that I don’t love Shue’s draft either, trust me. Unlike Ray and Shue, I was NOT a big Jordan Walker guy (call me when he can hit .200), and much like Ray, I was also not a big Ha-Seong Kim guy either. The rest of his picks were either good or fine, but I’m just chalking this one up to Covid somehow making me lose my sense of taste, since everything is Covid’s fault these days.
Nellamaniacs- B
Welcome back, Nelly! I liked Nelly’s draft, however brief it was. Like Ray, I wasn’t a big Tucker guy, but the rest of the picks were pretty good, and we’ll spin the wheel to see if Colmenarez becomes the J2 from this class that blows up, for no reason that anyone can foresee right, because that’s how J2’s work.
Pro Bowlers- A-
Like Ray, I really liked Pat’s draft as well, and he only gets a minus from me because Blake Hunt doesn’t really do much for me. But I was a big fan of basically everyone else he took in the first four rounds, and you should be too. And everyone he took after that was mostly fine too, because at that point we’re all just throwing darts, so who the hell cares, right?
Rollin Goats- D+
Death, taxes, me not liking Cale’s draft. Like Ray, I liked Vukovich, just not that high, but I gave Cale a Plus because that was tremendous value on Jared Kelley, who I liked a bit. I don’t even want to mention Odubel Herrera’s name, to prevent a cross-time zone argument between Tom and Jeff, and the rest of his draft was a bunch of guys not on my board. So congrats, Cale, like every year, I hate your draft.
The Big Hurts- B-
Vince’s draft was fine, but I just can’t find anything I really love from it. I think Crochet was a good value where he was taken, but I’m with the crowd that he’s probably a reliever for most if not all of his career, if he even stays healthy. The other guys Vince took were fine, and uh, that’s about all I got.
The Big Units- B
Considering he was sitting next to me for the draft, I liked most of Carroll’s picks, and not just because I recommended a few of them. Handanglypart could end up locking down a rotation spot for the next decade, and the rest of what he took was some great upside, along with some good floor guys. Bailey was indeed a pretty solid reach where he took him, but maybe, just maybe, Bailey will hit enough to justify it, because he’s a lock to stay behind the plate.
Tom Cats- D
Let’s be honest, a D might seem nice to some of you, but I think if you look at it through the lense of “Go Get Your Guys”, Tom had a draft that he loves. Meyer was polarizing, but could very well be the best pitcher to come out of this draft, and out of the handful of absurdly high risk, high reward players he took, if one of them pans out, it’s kind of worth it. Also, as mentioned on the podcast, Ariharah sliding to where he did was wild to me, so props to Tom there.
Your Mom- A+
Trust me, I don’t feel good about this either, but I really loved Ray’s draft. Sabato was probably underrated just because of his position, or lack thereof, but I really liked all of the pitchers Ray took after that, which is uncommon given that he took six of them. I didn’t like Morrobel a ton, but Shalin Polanco I liked quite a bit, plus his name sounds like a Hispanic Samurai, what’s not to like there? I’m going to go take a shower now, and vow to hate all of these players eventually.
