‘Tis the season. For this year’s draft grades, I figured just averaging the pick score wasn’t fair enough to those of us picking outside the points-rich first round, and gave each pick a corresponding score, based on what the player in that spot on my draft board would get. So, if everyone just followed my draft board, the delta would be zero. But obviously, that was not the case. Also there were 32 players not on my 352 player board(every unowned player in the BA book above a 45) that were not picked, so I gave them all a 45, well below my value for pick 160, which was 49.25. So here’s the rankings according to my system, sorted by player value minus pick value divided by total picks. I’ve also highlighted the average pick value, which tells you who landed all the talent, regardless of pick position.
For Funzies, here’s a recap for each team’s draft:
Baby Seals- Fred apparently won the draft for me, which is odd, since I didn’t like his high picks that much, and neither did my system; Montgomery was a tough reach, with 5.50 points under pick value. But he made it up in the second half with big positive delta picks like Drew Beam(5.42) and Ryan Johnson (4.08). Fun fact- Malcolm Moore was the only pick besides Sasaki and Bazzana to be picked exactly where I had him ranked, at #56.
Ball Busters- Eric JK had a great draft with little capital, with Connelly Early(5.83) and Tomoyuki Sugano(5.75) leading the way, making up for some picks that were not on my board. I also really liked the Chace pick(-1), even more than my system did.
Banocolates- I really did like Jeff’s draft, I was a believer in Wetherholt (3.25), and I think him getting Morlando and Yesavage in the late second were absolute steals. If he could just avoid light-hitting Twins infielders, he might’ve taken the top spot.
Bloop and a Blast- Ross made an absolute statement to the rest of the league upon his arrival- he really likes the Dodgers. But seriously, there were several picks of his that I really liked, and I was very saddened to have him take Kellon Lindsey and Cobb Hightower before I got the chance. He was mostly undone by the fact that my system HATES Johnny King (-13.00) and does not like Payne(-8.17) or Dix(-8.17).
BROB’s Barnacles- Hard not to like Brian’s draft haul, even if you’re stopping after pick #2. I think getting Slade Caldwell at 18 was a steal as well(4.75), but in the reverse of Fred, I did not like the rest of Brian’s draft, and neither did my system.
Danimals- Dan managed to get more average value in my system than I did, which is probably due to his 45 first round picks. I really did like the Josuar(3.92) and Chen-Wei Lin(1.83) picks, and apparently David Shields(4.00), too. I did agree with my system that Cam Smith((-8.75) and Ryan Waldschmidt(-6.50) were reaches, but I didn’t think they were quite that egregious. Bad system, bad, no treats.
Fajita Eaters- The funny part about lining this draft up with my board is that the further the draft goes along, the better the values get, according to my board. So while I loved the Ryan Sloan pick for obvious reasons, he was my second lowest score(1.50), and the pick I think I liked the least, Dylan Dreiling, was a system Grand Slam(6.58). Go figure.
Kelly’s Heroes- JK was a multitasking fool, running not one, not two, but three drafts, and a successful retail operation, all in the same afternoon. I loved, loved the Harrison pick (5.08) and the Soto pick(4.33), which made up for some off the board picks towards the end of the draft.
Motley Shue- Shue had a great draft, helped by my system liking his top J15 picks, Elian Pena(5.92) and Cris Rodriguez(6.25). He didn’t have many picks, but apparently only really messed up one, Kale Fountain(-10.67).
Nellamaniacs- Nelly broke all of our hearts by not coming to the draft, but put up a pretty consistent effort, not measuring too far in either direction on my scale. My system didn’t love him, but I really like the Hyeseong Kim pick(-0.58), as Nelly tries to cobble together a competitive team. Ethan Schiefelbein was Nelly’s top value(1.83) and also a really fun name to say.
Pro Bowlers- Opposite to Nelly, Pat was all over the board for me, with several picks I loved like Bradgley(4.08), Brecht(4.17), Burns(3.42) and most crushing for me personally, Kevin Alvarez(1.92). I also really like Pat landing the top two draftee pitchers in the draft, as I had been stumping for all offseason. On the back end, my system hated Rynders(off board), Thomas(-11.25) and DeMartini(-11.25), to balance things out.
Rollin’ Goats- Death, taxes, and me not liking JK Cale’s draft. There was only six picks made, but three of them were off my board, and the other three weren’t so hot either. This is a badge of honor for Cale, and Yahil Melendez(-10.83) and Aroon Escobar(-10.50) will probably end being good anyway, just to spite me.
The Big Units- Carroll wisely employed Giles to run his draft room, and they were immediately rewarded with Seaver King(3.33) falling in their laps in the second round, and getting great values on Bryce Cunningham(4.00) and Kash Mayfield(1.67). I didn’t love the rest of their draft though, and we’re not going to talk about that trade…
Tom Cat’s- I told Tom Saturday night that I didn’t love his draft, and sure as shit, it turns out I really didn’t! I liked his value grabbing Dante Nori at 29(1.92), but then in true Tom fashion, he went off my board on 7 of his next 11 picks. Turns out Tom should’ve changed his last name to Galaxybrain [sizzling noises].
Your Mom- Ray’s draft wasn’t among my favorites, and he seemed to have a slightly softer yin and yang than Pat did, having four picks I liked Bonemer(3.00), Lomavita(1.92), Cruz(1.67), and Yorger Bautista(-0.08). Ray balanced that out with Burke(-8.75), Antunez(off board), and Mathis(-7.00). But I legally cannot doubt Ray, because he has more championships, or something.
