Here are the results of the ranked voting I asked of all of the CPL owners last week.
It’s worth noting every team received a top ten vote, and many of the top ten teams were left off of at least one ballot, so there really was a smattering of votes, and several different criteria used by owners to justify their rankings, as several shared with me. I took everyone’s list, and reversed the order 1-10 into 10-1 to give each team a score. Pretty standard.
Thanks again to the eleven owners who sent me their lists, and here are the Top Ten-
10- Kelly’s Heroes (18 points)- With one Division Championship, and several solid teams throughout the years including a best record and a league leading two solo MOY awards. it’s easy to see how JK gets respect from his fellow CPL owners. However, without much sustained success due to his roller coaster general managing, it’s also understandable to see why isn’t ranked higher.
9- Baby Seals ( 26 points)- I said this on the show last week, but Fred very much suffers from other owners holding a “fluke” championship against him, despite him having solid teams for years, and that he’s about to go on another solid run here. As many playoff appearances as Tiger, more than Dan, Rick, JK, or Rem, and another World Series appearance on his resume.
8- Fajita Eaters (39 points)- I truly am humbled by most folks remembering that I did have good teams in the past, including two best records and five division titles. Admittedly, the CPL was not a priority for me for a few years there, and my team very much did suffer from it. But hopefully, better years are on the horizon.
7- Scared Hitless (44 points)- Earning his respect the hard way, Rick has literally built his franchise from the foundation up, and I think there’s a lot of respect for that, as there should be. Throw in one Championship already, and he could be on his way up the list as he continues to make the playoffs each year.
6- Ball Busters (47 points)- Eric probably doesn’t get the credit his team deserves (see the numbers above), but that’s easy to understand given that he’s always had pretty good teams, but has rarely had a really great team.
5- Motley Shue (60 points)- It’s nice to see most owners recognize Shue as a top notch owner in the league, despite not having won a title. I’ve said from roughly year 2 or 3 of this league that Shue is the 1918-2003 Red Sox, and I guess I didn’t know how prophetic that would be. Sorry Shue! But once Shue does add a title, it’s going to be just merely the cherry on top of an incredible list of accolades, including five division titles, 2 best records, 2 World series appearances, and four, FOUR best Roto teams(both within that season, and all time).
4- Mauling Tigers (63 points)- Tiger gets a lot of credit for his 12 year old championship and two other World Series appearances, but I think also from the tenacity with which he manages. Come hell or high water, Tiger is managing to win, and even though his mouth runs in circles at times, there a part of that effort to be respected.
3- Danimals (86 points)- Dan has certainly taken the CPL by storm with his current dynasty. While he inherited a historic farm system, he’s no doubt put his own stamp on this franchise, and made all of the moves necessary to by tied for most titles won, and half the time of anyone else. It’ll be interesting to see where Dan’s team goes from here as his roster ages, if he can keep up his success.
2-Rollin Goats (95 points)- As Cale will tell you, he’s one of the premier teams in the league, and it’s not really all that debatable. Cale has put together both dominant teams, with three Best Roto teams within the season and all time, and two titles in three World Series trips. His teams are top of the Roto lists, and his list of accomplishments is really only second to one other team.
1- Your Mom (105 points)- There’s many superlatives that you could use to describe Ray’s dominance in the CPL, from never missing the playoffs, to literally being in more than half of the World Series played. Ray has also backed this up with legitimate great teams, and tying for the most titles to boot. Fun fact from the Roto spreadsheet that underscores his great consistency- he has never had a team worse than 69th all time, which means Ray owns 18% of the best 70 Roto teams ever.
