After another exciting and hard fought World Series, Your Mom prevailed over Pro Bowlers 11-4-1 to take home their second consecutive, and fifth overall, World Series trophy.
Pro Bowlers started strong and jumped out to a lead on Monday that they would hold all the way through Saturday night. Their offense was led by Bo Bichette, who finished the week with an incredible 11 hits that included an impressive 4-hit effort on Saturday. Ty France also had a strong World Series, collecting 7 hits, and Gunnar Henderson- in spite of hitting only .182- collected an impressive 7 walks.
But throughout the playoffs the backbone of Pro Bowlers has been their pitching, and their arms showed up again in the World Series. Their team ERA and WHIP finished at 1.76 and 0.98, respectively, good enough to take those categories. Pro Bowlers’ standout arms were Blake Snell (2 starts, 11 IP, 12 K, 0.82 ERA, 0.73 WHIP) Hunter Greene (1 start, 6 IP, 10 K, 0.00 ERA), and Logan Gilbert (1 start, 8 IP, 1.13 ERA, 0.63 WHIP).
Unfortunately for the Bowlers, they did not string together enough offense (lost 7 hitting categories) while splitting the pitching categories. Bichette was one of their few hitters that continued to hit throughout the week. Their whole offense had a terrific NLDS and decent NLCS, however outside of Bichette and France, the Bowlers had only one hitter- Juan Soto (.261)- hit over .250 during the World Series. Their young, phenomenal bats who had helped carry Pro Bowlers to the World Series- guys like Michael Harris, Kyle Tucker, Vlad Guerrero, Nathan Lowe, and Eloy Jimenez- ran out of steam as they combined for only 17 hits and 2 HR during the week. And from their catcher spot, they did not collect a hit all week as the combo of Mejia and Trevino went a combined 0-16.
This Your Mom team has been labeled by some as the best team in CPL history, and all the pressure was on them to follow up their dominant regular season with another championship. In spite of being decimated by injuries heading into the postseason, they were able to rely upon their depth and good fortune to string together some timely hitting. Your Mom collected 21 hits, 15 runs, 4 HR, 10 RBI, and 2 SB over the weekend, helping them take all 5 of those categories.
During the week, Your Mom used a total of 17 different hitters as they attempted to overcome injuries to players like Julio Rodriguez, Starling Marte, Byron Buxton, and Matt Carpenter. During the course of the World Series, Your Mom burned 12 options, used both playoff reserves, and had to cut a player (Adam Ottavino) when there were no more options to burn. Some of Your Mom’s players saw time in the World Series after never seeing the lineup during the regular season, and many jumped on the opportunity to showcase their talent. But no one player took greater advantage of their chance than outfielder Will Brennan, who would’ve been kept in the minors if not for all the injuries. Brennan paced Your Mom during the World Series hits (7), average (.412), OPS (1.180) and runs (5), while finishing second on the team in HR, BB, and RBI all on his way to being named the 2022 World Series MVP.
Pitching has always been the calling card for Your Mom, and their arms threw well enough this week to help secure their championship. They used 12 different pitchers and were anchored by mid-season addition Tyler Anderson, who they acquired at the waiver-trade deadline from Pro Bowlers. In two starts, Anderson totaled 11 innings with a sub-1 WHIP and a surprising 13 strikeouts, 10 of which came on Sunday and helped Your Mom take the category. Anderson stepped up when the big names in the rotation like Gerrit Cole, Yu Darvish, Max Fried, and Shane McClanahan did not pitch up to expectations. Your Mom’s bullpen also pitched very well and did enough to help them take both saves and holds. Your Mom’s relievers threw a total of 10.2 innings, striking out 20 without surrendering an earned run.
And now Your Mom begins their championship celebration. The first CPL event where celebration can happen is the End of Year Awards Ceremony, to be held October 28th at Top Golf in Brooklyn Center.
In additional news, this year for the first time ever the CPL had a 3rd place game that took place between American League representative Tom Cat’s and National League representative The Big Hurts. This was a very close game that came down to the Sunday night matchup between the Mets and Braves. After all the games were played, The Big Hurts stood victorious 8-7-1. Joc Pederson led the way for the Big Hurts, finishing with 9 hits, a .450 average and an astounding 1.492 OPS and took home the 3rd place game MVP. Congratulations to The Big Hurts on the victory.
