Ball Busters Wins Second Championship
8 years after winning their first World Series, Ball Busters has claimed the top spot in the CPL again after defeating Tom Cat’s in a nail biter by a final score of 8-6-2.
It was a hard fought victory with Tom Cat’s leading at many points throughout the week. In fact, according to the Banocolates’ computer, heading into the weekend Tom Cat’s had a 51% chance of winning. But a big weekend from Ball Busters helped them beat the odds.
Ball Busters had a strong week offensively, finishing with 70 hits and a .287 average. 5 offensive categories went to Ball Busters, and most impressively Ball Busters stole 12 bases to set a CPL World Series record. Stealing 5 of those bases was Adalberto Mondesi who had an incredible week on his way to winning World Series MVP. Mondesi had an incredible 16 hits, 10 runs, 8 RBI and finished the week with a .615 average and an unbelievable 1.809 OPS. Mondesi’s week was arguably the single best offensive week in World Series history.
On the pitching side Ball Busters did not have a strong performance but still managed to take 3 categories after racking up the strikeouts and wins with a strong WHIP. Ball Busters’ pitchers fell flat this week, with typically reliable pitchers Lance Lynn and Johnny Cueto each posting an ERA over 14, and other pitchers like Lou Trivino, Liam Hendricks, and Kenta Maeda all with ERAs over 4.50. But as previously stated, Busters garnered enough wins and strikeouts with a low enough WHIP to steal enough pitching away from Tom Cat’s that, along with their strong offensive week, earned Ball Busters their second title.
Tom Cat’s put up a heck of a fight after clawing their way back to the World Series for the second straight season, this time as the #4 seed. After beating Your Mom in the ALDS, they put away Fajita Eaters in the ALCS. And they were very close to their first CPL title due in large part to a strong pitching performance. Sonny Gray was Tom Cat’s strongest player, throwing over 10 innings with 12 Ks and a WHIP under 1. Gray by himself was not enough, and Tom Cat’s bats did not perform as they had earlier in the playoffs. That was enough to keep Tom Cat’s in the runner up positions for the second straight year.
This was an exciting world series to cap an exciting season. Congratulations to Ball Busters on their success. After entering the playoffs as the 3rd seed and beating Rollin’ Goats in the ALDS, Ball Busters beat Kelly’s Heroes in a close matchup in the NLCS. Now they have put away Tom Cat’s and are once again at the top of the CPL hill.
